Publishing a PHP magazine - quick assessment

August 24th, 2010

Having a PHP job with a great company is fun and challenging. In my free time I want to do more (with) PHP. Contributing as a coder to the PHP community is one way, but there must be more ways.

Publishing a printed PHP magazine

I like reading about PHP and web development, staying up-to-date and improving my skills. I have plenty books and access to online articles, but I miss reading a magazine. Yes, I am one of those people who likes printed magazines!

The idea of publishing a magazine myself started a few months ago and has ever since been on my mind practically 24/7. Is it a nice idea but nothing more, or does it have more potential? I feel now is the time to start doing something with it or it’ll stay just an idea forever.

95% of me says to just do it and see what happens. The other 5% is still in doubt. What it comes down to  is the following important factors to make this work for me and the magazine:

  1. 1,000 or more PHP web developers wanting to subscribe
  2. the PHP developers enjoy reading the magazine
  3. the PHP developers voice their opinions about the magazine and content in order for me to improve it on different levels
  4. loyal subscribers benefit from reduced subscription price after ie. 2 year

Assessing the market quickly with a poll

I set up a poll on Twtpoll to quickly assess whether further research in the magazine would be worth it. In this poll I asked you to cast a vote and retweet the poll. Voting is anonymous.

The question was:

What are your thoughts on a printed magazine for all-round PHP web developers? Yes, no, maybe? Please motivate choice.

Having only 140 characters it was difficult to formulate 1 good question that will result in the type of answers I was looking for. The response rate is very low (23) and may mean anything. The answers vary, they are both negative and positive.  Nevertheless I am happy with the results. It is an incentive for me to do a more in-depth market research.

What stands out is that about 8 voters mention PHP|Architect’s magazine. Perhaps the combination of ” PHP” and “magazine” associate very strongly with PHP|Architects magazine for PHP devs. It is like an icon! I too enjoyed that magazine very much, it is a shame that they stopped printing it. Few mentioned the German PHP Magazin. Unfortunately I don’t read or speak German.

I thank all who left their feedback!

Conclusion of poll

The poll was a quick assessment to see whether the idea of publishing a magazine for PHP developers as hobby (and perhaps as work in the far future) has any potential.

This quick assessment resulted positive and I will research the possibilities further. An update will be posted as soon as I know more about it.

Now… will publishing a PHP magazine a nice way to contribute to the PHP community?
If you have any comments, please voice them by commenting on this article.

I’d like to take a moment to comment on few of the interesting responses.

The same as PHP|Architect’s magazine?

I can imagine the strong association with PHP|Architect when reading the words PHP and magazine. The magazine I have in mind is similar to PHP|Architect in a sense that there will be articles related to PHP. There is, in general lines, basically where the similarity stops. I won’t disclose too much info just yet.

Save trees, don’t print!

The last thing I want is to waste precious trees for a magazine or anything. I will stop using toiletpaper or napkins and for every roll I save, I will print one magazine!! Just kidding!

I agree on not wasting trees! Fortunately there is no need to waste trees for a magazine. Alternatives to fresh paper I’ll be looking into is the use of recycled paper and (near) wood-free paper. Most ideally 100% wood-free obviously.

Why print? Just read online!

The web offers plenty of good articles to read and improve your development skills. If you are one of the developers who likes reading online, by all means continue to do so. The magazine I have in mind is for you if you like to read a printed magazine as well. After all, the experience of a printed magazine in your hands is different from reading articles online or from a screen.

Devs like their info searchable and online

I totally agree on that. At times when I need to find something I’ll go online and Google it. In those circumstances a magazine usually won’t do unless I specifically know which magazine has the answer I am looking for. A magazine is for reading, usually also to relax and to be informed. Like one developer once said similar to: “use the right tool, in the right time/situation”.  I quite like to use this to illustrate: A magazine is for those like reading magazines at their own pace. Ctrl+f and Google for those who need to find something right away.

ePub / eBooks are the future

Yes it is most definitely! It is cool to have an eBook reader or similar to read electronic magazines. Although I don’t totally agree that eBooks are the future. I think a better phrase would be: eBooks are part of the future.

In the end it is all about preferences and I am focussed on the PHP developer who likes reading printed magazines :)

Showing off my learner Yamaha XVS Dragstar 125

October 18th, 2009

There is a lot I’d like to write about but time is not what I have. Internship takes up most of my time, then my school project and finally my beautiful Dragstar. Just a quick post to show off my beauty :)

Motorcycle licence in London works a bit different than in the Netherlands. There are different types and the basic one is the CBT (Compulsory Basic Training

With just a CBT you are allowed to ride a bike/scooter with restrictions. The CBT is a training day where you learn to control, make manoeuvres and ride the bike. The restrictions are max 125cc, you have to ride with L-plates, no Motorways.

As soon as I have the money, I’ll go for my full licence to get rid of the L-plates and maybe, just maybe buy a bigger bike. But for now I can not imagine selling this beauty for the next few years…

MY in London - Since I started my internship

May 16th, 2009

oh wowowie..what have I been doing so far in the UK? I thought my life here in London would evolve around internship-UK and studios92 but that nightmare came to an end quickly. The nightmare is still there and it is hard to get rid of but is getting better and better. Obviously you will find a few lines or posts more even about this company in my future posts.

I know people from studios92 are reading with me and are following my every move on this. To those at studios92 who feel addressed: no worries, this will gradually reduce.

Sooow, what have I been doing in London since I left studios92 and started with Touchnote? An update for those who like to know..

Letting things go | rant

September 30th, 2008

What I have learned mostly the past few weeks as a project manager/team member is:

  • I have (at least I think) distinct ideas of how certain parts of a project should run therefore
  • I wish to do the things my way and feel frustrated when the rest of the group rejects my ideas
  • Either I am bad explaining or sometimes people don’t actually listen to what I am trying to say
  • There are many ways that lead to Rome. Knowing this is not enough this should be practised as well.

MY healthy Fruity time

September 28th, 2008

One of the things I look forward to every week is my fruity day. In weekends (mostly Sundays) I prepare my own juice for the day and it is delicious! Some pics for you and the simple but very healthy recipe.

fruity mix differences

First glass is juice orange with strawberry only. Later I added the raspberries and the colour gets more pink/purple. Taste with raspberry is more sweet and mild. The lime give it an extra bite ;) Read more…

It’s good to be back @ LearningCentre

September 25th, 2008

I just want to mention it is good to be back at work! I am a semi teacher / student assistant at the LearningCentre. It is fun and responses from the student are very positive. Only now I realise that teaching is one of the things I like to do in life. Teaching people who are eager to learn, that is. The next 4 months are probably the last months I will be working for LearningCentre. :(

After 4 months my industrial placement of 5 months starts, hopefully at Swan Web Solutions. If it is not Swan Web Solutions then it will be a dutch web development company. Either way, after these 4 months my career as web developer finally starts!

oke, this is my final post for today.

my Sponsor = YOUR company @ my PHPNW08

September 22nd, 2008

As a becoming PHP developer, obviously, I want to learn! How? like, visit as many conferences and meetings as I possibly can, meet kind PHP developers.

This post is about one of those opportunities (to learn) that nobody wants to miss.

Oke, this is the deal

I am a becoming PHP developer and You are a PHP (or related to PHP) company.

I want to learn PHP and I am in search of a sponsor for my flight and hotel near PHPNW (~€400).

I am most certain that there is something you want!

What is in it for your company?

More than you know! The possibilities are endless!

The question is:

What can I do for your company at

PHPNW to get you what you want?

One of the possibilities are:

  • I wear a black or white shirt with YOUR COMPANY LOGO on the back and front (and even on the shoulders if you are that exited). Lots of photo’s will be taken with me wearing the shirt with YOUR company LOGOs on it! These photo’s will be published on my Flickr account (it is almost like carve in stone. Difference is that people need not to travel to this stone, they only need internet connection).
  • My review of PHPNW08 will contain photo’s with me and my shirt as well…with a thank you note to my sponsor (=YOU).

Don’t hesitate to contact me if you want to sponsor me in any other way than a shirt :) ..

Now I am crossing my fingers, hoping someone will respond to my desperate call ;)

phpnw08 PHP Conference 22/11/2008

If you would like to help me, but don’t want to sponsor my trip, spreak the word by forwarding or retweeting this to people/companies you know who might be interested :) thank you to all who reply and retweet :)
