Concept | Personal Brainstorm

September 30th, 2008

I am going to do a little brainstorm/analyse, my way in my own sandbox for now, before I forget what I have in mind right now. Small notes about:

  • Distribute software
  • Digitalize prints (aka create web/pc) software
  • Situations any software can be used
  • Conceptual ideas

The assignment as you might have read a few posts before this one: Digitalize existing math methods for kids age between 6.5 and 8.5 years and create prototype.

Distribute software

There are different ways to distribute software.

Onsite - No “download, save (,install) and play” but play it on a site in a window, example is Zylom.nl. In Holland, most people have a PC and internet these days. To visit a site and play the game has a low threshold and is one of the easiest way to get your target group to play it.

Examples: zylom, onlineklas.nl

By download - Download whole or parts of the game. This way the game can be played without internet connection. Low threshold but not as low as the Onsite option if you exclude internet connection.

Examples: download.com, zylom

By physical product - Speaks for itself (I assume). Same as the By download option. The game can be easily taken to friends etc. The ease of getting this product is less easy as above options.

Examples: CD/DVD for PC/Console, USB, Chips for eg Handheld game console

Digitalize prints

There are few ways to digitalize prints and integrate design with it.

Scripting language - We have at least an ActionScripter and a PHPer in the group.

Examples: flash, PHP (with MySQL)

Programming language - we have none programming language guys in the group.

Examples: C++, C

Graphical design is done by 3 guys.

Situations where software is used/displayed

PC and screen: Home, classroom

PC and Interactive whiteboard: most likely in the classroom only

Console and (TV) screen:  Home, classroom

Everywhere: Handheld game console

The concepts

For some reason I am thinking ‘open source’ as well. But the client wants to earn money and I have not yet figured out how to bring in money with open source and his product. On the other side, open source means a lower treshold and perhaps a new opening in earning money or perhaps ‘open source’ doesn’t fit in the commercial intentions of the client, but that is not our concern.

…moving along…

Idea v1. The more visual clear idea I have for a few weeks is:

A website where kids can register an account. An area where kids can play game-like math excersises on different levels according to the clients methodology. Website is written with PHP (ActionScript and Flash for the website part is too sluggish to do that IMO).  ActionScript and Flash used for the game. Parts of the game are free and parts of the game require a subscription.

2 others of the project group had the same idea, what a coincidence.

Idea v2. After today the idea refined slightly:

The same as the idea v1 but instead of a game only, this account gives access to different math excersises and access to different contests. Access to the contests is gained and unlocked by completing the excersises successfully. Having contests created by the developers, there should also be a module where kids can create their own math contests.

The child in control

The part where the child can create its own contest CAN BE as follows: pick one of the pre-made designs and enter your own math excersises. The child itself should also provide the answer per excersise, therefore the level of the excersise can not exceed the level of the average child (unless s/he is super natural talent and this line needs some more tweaking to make it sound better).

Having the child in control..might have a certain advantage, encouragement on different aspects etc etc

The regular excersises should excersise the clients profound math methodologies. When the child is capable to blindly complete a certain excersise level, then provide him the fun stuff that requires the ‘blind’ skills.

Oke, my thoughts for now..Perhaps a version 3 will ever come.. bubye
